One of the most-recognizable images in India, the white marble and mosaic Taj Lake Palace was built in 1746 and sits on a four-acre island in the middle of Lake Pichola. Descendants of the royal butlers of the original palace maintain the property, and guests are treated as if they were royalty themselves.
Each of the 83 rooms is decorated with richly colored silks and hand-carved wooden furniture, and offer views of the lake. Guests enjoy walks around the palace--with a glass of champagne in hand--as well as more grueling outdoor activities like guided treks and Jeep safaris.
