Top 15 vacation spots

It's not hard to find a common characteristic among Forbes Traveler's top 15 North American vacation spots: sun, sand and sea clearly dominate the leisure-destination favorites.

From the sprawling, desert-oasis swimming pools of Las Vegas to the golden sands of Maui, warmth and water rank high on the list of features sought after by vacationers in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

We gathered data on flights, hotels, vacation packages and customer preferences from six major travel organizations and agencies.

The Carlson Wagonlit travel agency network, and Cruise Lines International Association, Inc.) to present a snapshot of the hottest vacation hangouts during the past year.

While tropical climates comprise the lion's share of our list, not all preferred vacation paradises are perpetually sun-soaked. Some sites, such as the famous sands of Oahu's Waikiki Beach or the theme-park mecca Orlando, Florida, were warm-weather shoo-ins. But others—like the decidedly un-tropical metropolises of New York or Chicago—appealed to travelers with their urban charms.

The vacations division at Carlson Wagonlit Travel has seen a roughly 35 per cent increase in clients booking vacations to North American cities this year, said Gerard Bellino, the company's Vice President of U.S. Leisure. New York, San Francisco, and Orlando top Carlson Wagonlit's best-seller list for 2009—and all three ranked highly on the lists of the other agencies we polled.

"Orlando has historically been a popular family vacation destination," said Bellino. "However, the increased popularity of New York and San Francisco is likely because hotel pricing is more affordable this year, making these normally pricey destinations much more attractive and affordable for vacationers."

Other travel experts echoed Bellino's findings about budget-conscious trends in recent travel. "A driving vacation or a regional vacation is looking more attractive this year than last," said Genevieve Brown, senior editor at Travelocity, who added that "value-added promotions are more plentiful this year. We're seeing an abundance of deals."

Travelocity's findings lined up with top-sellers at other agencies we polled—Las Vegas, Orlando, Los Angeles and New York City led the online travel agency's best-seller list. And Brown pointed out some of the top-selling vacation activities within those markets: Blue Man Group, the multimedia theatrical performance, was the top Travelocity seller for Las Vegas and Chicago, while Broadway shows were the most popular activity for vacationers in New York City, and Disneyland drew tourists visiting Los Angeles.

The top destinations at Travel-Ticker looking for inspirational or leisure-focused travel") also revealed a mix of urban and tropical destinations. Las Vegas, Chicago and New York led the online agency's list of best-sellers for the past 12 months, but balmier destinations were well-represented: Among Travel-Tickers most popular vacation packages were waterfront San Diego resorts, four-star Orlando resorts near Disneyland, Big Island (Hawaii) and Waikiki condos, and resorts in the Bahamas.

Overall, the Forbes Traveler list is distinctly ocean-colored, and the Caribbean was home to many vacationers' favorite stops. (We’re pushing the boundaries of “North America,” but we felt that much of the Caribbean belonged on the list because of north-of-the equator location and proximity to the U.S. and Mexico.) A 2008 Cruise Lines International Association survey found that the Caribbean/Eastern Mexico was the most popular cruise destination (43% of respondents listed it as the destination they were most likely to go to on their next cruise vacation).

The Caribbean and Eastern Mexico also figured prominently on several other agencies' top-seller lists. Cancun and the "Mayan Riviera," the stretch of coastline along the Caribbean side of the Yucatan Peninsula, made the top 15 on the Expedia.

Sunbathing and water sports, such as snorkeling and scuba diving in the spectacular Great Maya Reef, fill up travelers' itineraries in the resort-lined beaches along the coast of the Mexican state Quintana Roo. From golf to shopping to fine dining to cultural and historical riches, the vacation destinations on our list will appeal to a wide variety of travelers. Read the slideshow to see which destinations made the cut.

With luxury tour operator Abercrombie & Kent reaching the South Pole might not be easy, but it is possible. For $42,000, amateur explorers are guided by experts like Geoff Somers, who has completed over 1,600 miles of snow and ice travel, including nine trips to the South Pole. The trip takes approximately 18 days, though guests are encouraged to leave five days at the beginning and end of the trip for flight delays and other unexpected occurrences.

Greek Islands Vacations

The Greek Islands are a collection of over 6,000 islands and islets that belong to Greece. Only 227 of the islands are inhabited and of those, only 78 have more than 100 inhabitants. The large body of land in southern Greece called Peloponnese, is not a Greek island at all as it is connected to the mainland by the small Isthmus of Corinth land bridge.

The largest Greek island by area is the 260km long island of Crete, located at the southern edge of the Aegean Sea, and serves as an administrative division (periphery) of itself. Crete to the south, along with Greece to the north and west, and Turkey to the east, make up the rough boundary of the Aegean Sea. The second largest Greek island is Euboea at 150km long. Euboea is located parallel and close to the east coast of the Greek mainland, and is administered as part of the central Greece periphery. Smaller still are the islands of Lesbos and Rhodes, which are both located near the coast of Turkey. The remaining islands are at least two thirds of the area of Rhodes or smaller.

Most of the Greek islands are in groupings located within the Aegean Sea or on its southern edge. A final grouping, the Ionian Islands, is located to the west of the mainland in the Ionian Sea, although one of these islands, Kythira, is off the southern tip of the mainland, but still considered part of the Ionian Islands. The close proximity of so many islands and their respective, historic cities makes the Greek islands an interesting and exciting travel destination.

Lord Howe Island, South Pacific:

In the South Pacific Island, only two hours flying distance from Australia, lays Lord Howe Island just waiting to be discovered. With a maximum of twenty guests, this island understands the importance of privacy and respects the space of its guest. The non crowded, unspoiled beaches with golden sand are just a taste of this getaway. Furthermore, Lord Howe boasts to having the most exquisite coral reefs in the world therefore the snorkeling is priceless. Other activities include mountain biking, golf, tennis, cycling, and canoeing. But why did this spot make the list? If the previous descriptions did not impress you, maybe the fact that the island was developed by volcanic activity and therefore has its own biodiversity not seen anywhere in the else in the world, will. The island has over 130 species of birds, over 500 species of fish, and 90 different corals reefs. This vacation spot is literally one of a kind.

Edward I's seven magnificent castles

The medieval Gough Map is the oldest recognisable map of Britain. No one knows who created it or why, but it represents a quantum leap in map-making, which previously had been largely theological.

One of the few accepted facts about the map, according to a book by Nick Millea, is that it was drawn in the mid-14th century. But it is possibly a copy of one created 70 years earlier, conceived as a work of propaganda to underline Edward I's claim to Wales and Scotland. The two major routes shown from England into Wales, for example, are precisely those used by Edward's invading armies. The more northerly one runs from Chester down to Cardigan, linking seven key castles – and it was this route I decided to try to follow.

Cairo, Egypt: My kind of town

Why Cairo? I went to Cairo for a few weeks but fell in love with a beautiful Egyptian doctor and ended up staying four years. To spend time together away from the prying eyes of conservative Egyptian society we got to know one another over the card table, playing a kind of Egyptian bridge called tarneeb.

What do you miss most when you’re away? Two things: the relaxed approach to life. Nothing in Egypt is urgent, everything is negotiable and when you do find yourself faced with an insurmountable problem, a friend of a friend can always sort it out. Then there’s the social networking – not the kind you do by yourself on the internet, but the real thing, meeting up every day to chat with friends or family.

Canada AM Beating the February Blues With Virtual Vacations

Is winter over yet? It’s been months of shorter days and gloomy weather here in Canada and as much as our bodies and minds may feel it’s time to move on; old man winter hasn’t finished his stay. Even when the sun does poke out from behind the clouds, it’s quickly followed by freezing rain or snow, once again.

For many Canadians this is a time of year when we suffer from a general malaise, a dose of cabin fever. Our hearts and minds yearn for cheerful skies, to reconnect with nature, to hear the crunch of sand underfoot, to soar with a sense of adventure, to just see examples of life blooming all around. It’s time for a vacation getaway, an escape, but with the economy matching the weather’s gloom, everyone is staying put.

Canada AM is presenting a week-long series on battling the “February Blues” and they asked me if I had any ideas to help. Here then, are five getaway hotspots that offer a quick virtual vacation you can take at any time from the comfort of your home computer.

The Mayan Riviera are Mexicos top destination for international travelers

Cancun and its surrounding area of the Riviera Maya are Mexico’s top destination for international travelers, drawing more than 3.5 million visitors a year. The beach was the lure for the first visit my wife and I took six years ago. But since then, we’ve returned to explore the Northern Hemisphere’s largest barrier reef, natural springs pocking the Yucatan, mangrove swamps, salt marshes and thick jungle.

Much of the Yucatan is a flat limestone slab, topped with low jungle and scrub. There are no real rivers; the heavy seasonal rain seeps into sinkholes, known locally as cenotes, that have eroded over the millennia into the porous stone. The fresh water travels underground and percolates into the sea from natural springs.

The woods, cenotes and waters off the coast host a riot of colorful animals. Great blue herons, anteaters, the Yucatan rust rump tarantula, giant iguanas, ocelots, manatees and other animals make their home in the region.

Dream trip: The Leaning Tower of Pisa

The tower started leaning shortly after construction began in 1173, and the tilt got worse as work on the building continued over two centuries, with several delays and attempts to correct the problem. Blame the marshy soil of coastal Tuscany, Italy.

Most people make Pisa a day trip from Florence; it's an hour-long $6 train ride. After leaving the main exit of Pisa Centrale station. The tower is a half-hour walk north. Alternately, three buses, the Navetta A, #3, and #4, run approximately every 10 minutes (25 cents) and drop off passengers in front of the Field of Miracles, a piazza that's home to the tower, as well as to the Duomo and the Baptistry (both of which also tilt, but less obviously). A taxi from the train station costs about $9.

Tickets to get inside are $18 and are good for pre-set 30-minute visits; only 30 people can enter at a time. In the summer, it's wise to reserve tickets at opapisa.it for an additional $2.40 per person. Pickup is right next door to the tower at the Opera Museum.Once inside the tower, ascending the off-kilter circular staircase feels somewhat like bobbing from side to side on wide waves. Guards are strict about the half-hour limit, so even if you climb the 294 steps fast, you'll still have only 20 minutes at the top to let your stomach settle and check out the view before they usher you back down.

For an excellent postclimb lunch, head beyond the tower to Osteria dei Cavalieri, a Slow Food-approved restaurant with pastas for $13. Alternately, Divincibo, a shoebox-size store on the Piazza delle Vettovaglie, sells sandwiches for $4 . Royal Victoria Hotel is an elegant family-run establishment with a roof garden and large rooms.

Definitely worth experiencing, after all we are talking about the Wonder of the World!

The best family hotels in France

Finding accommodation that suits both adults and children isn't always easy. Leonie Glass suggests 10 hotels that everyone will enjoy in five of France's most family-friendly regions.
If you’re keen to avoid the drudgery of self-catering family holidays, but are fed up with frosty greetings when checking into hotels with your children, you need to find somewhere to stay where you will all feel comfortable.

Not a snooty place, where staff or other guests shush your children if they run down a corridor, or somewhere full of precious objects that invite disaster. And not a hotel where the accommodation is so basic that all of you have to squeeze into a tiny airless box. Here are some genuinely family-friendly places that parents and children can both enjoy.

San Diego

San Diego has a new flying attraction. The Gaslamp was once the Stingaree red-light district, home to Chinese opium dens, some 120 whorehouses, and the lawman Wyatt Earp. More than a century later, it is filled with jolly bars and restaurants like Osetra. The sixteen once-squalid square blocks of Victoriana at the city's center are freshly scrubbed—urban preservation by way of Chuck E. Cheese's.
San Diego is a place of many self-styled attractions, the San Diego Zoo, Shamu's SeaWorld. Now downtown is a cordoned off attraction, too.
San Diego County has more than its share of climatic zones from the coast to the mountains to the desert of the suburbanized interior. But in truth there are only two modes that really matter which are rain and shine, dark and light, off and on.

World's Largest Cruise Ship To Have NYC Theme

Yay, another massive cruise ship to fill our oceans with sewage and sludge so that bored pensioners can distract themselves from their impending deaths is being built in Finland, and this one's going to be the biggest one yet! Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas has a 1,200-foot-long hull that rises 213 feet above the waterline and displaces 220,000 gross register tons.
That's 42 percent grosser than the Independence of the Seas, which was the largest when it was christened two years ago, and five times the displacement of the Titanic, according to the Post.

Cruise Lines Set New Sails in Rough Financial Seas

The newest ship in the Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL) fleet will power out from Ft. Lauderdale on its maiden voyage on Nov. 23. The $750 million Celebrity Solstice has onboard features to wow even jaded cruise hounds—a half-acre lawn with real grass for picnics or putting, a two-story spa, and a wine-tasting cellar. Want to gaze at the sea in your bathrobe? By stacking more decks above the hull, 85% of its 1,425 rooms have private balconies, one-third more than other ships.
Royal Caribbean couldn't have picked a rougher time to set sail, however. The travel industry is in its worst slump since the September 11 terrorist attacks seven years ago. To lure customers, cruise lines are slashing prices, eliminating fuel surcharges, and redirecting ships from exotic locations to ports that don't require expensive air travel. "Our bookings held up well until mid-September," says Richard D. Fain, Royal Caribbean's longtime chairman and chief executive officer. "Then mid-September came with a crash."
Slumping demand isn't the only problem. With customers galore a few years ago, the industry ordered an armada of bigger, fancier vessels. Because they take so long to construct, the new ships are now just hitting the water. Royal Caribbean will add six ships by 2012 at a cost of $6 billion. Rival Carnival Cruise Lines (CUK) estimates the industry will launch 38 ships in North America and Europe over the next three years, adding 28% to capacity.

Dubai

Introduction

There is nowhere quite like Dubai. In this unique resort destination nothing is impossible - they have built golf courses in the desert, opened the Gulf's first ski field, created the world's first 7-star hotel and, in the latest outlandish project, are now constructing ‘The World', a string of islands in the shape of the globe. Add in sweeping beaches, bath temperature waters and first-rate facilities and it is easy to see why Dubai has become such a popular destination over the last decade.
Who goes there?
Dubai is not really a party destination as such with its main visitors being couples and families. These tend to be from Western Europe with the months leading up to Christmas and just after very popular when the weather is at its best.
Where in the world?
The emirate of Dubai lies on the western shores of the Gulf in the Middle East. It is surrounded by various other emirates, which are also members of the United Arab Emirates. The country of Oman is to the east. Dubai International Airport (DXB) is the nearest airport. The emirate spreads out from the warm waters of the Gulf across a flat plateau, with sweeping sand dune strewn deserts inland and the rugged mountains in the north and east on the border with Oman.
Beach
Dubai boasts a long stretch of Gulf coastline, much of it sprinkled with fine sand. The heart of the action is on Jumeirah Beach. This coastal strip is awash with luxury hotels, with many boasting their own corners of beach with all the usual facilities such as sun loungers and parasols. A range of watersports is also available. These are best arranged through your hotel.

History and fun lovers- all in Athens!

Travelers who expect to be greeted by lone standing relics of ancient Greece will be awestruck by the sprawling urban metropolis of today’s Athens. The capital city is an explorer’s paradise as historic gems are embedded within the modern day melee and cultural nuances of a turbulent past are written between the lines of concrete and the sparkling blue Aegean Sea. Everywhere in Athens is a testament to why this mythic peninsula is considered the cradle of Western civilization and modern democracy. In the spring and summer evenings, enjoy the cafés and restaurants as they begin to spill into the streets and squares. Greece, and particularly Athens, is notorious for its boisterous and tireless nightlife. The Port of Piraeus comes to life as many vacationers head out for their island excursions from this historic cove. Athens is the perfect place to become immersed in Greek culture and life before taking a ferry ride to one of the surrounding tranquil, historic or party islands – the choice is yours. The port itself is also of particular historic interest. One of the oldest in the world, the port was heavily used during the Peloponnesian Wars in the 4th century BC and remnants of the long Themistoclean Walls, which fortified the port and Athens together during this time period, still survive today.

A trip to Athens is not only a journey of history, but one of modernity and progress. After Greece’s golden age, Athens’ grandeur was squandered to nearly nothing by invaders and the sweeping tides of history. Today, the free and booming capital city is again a testament to its historic commitment to forward thinking civilization. Experience the rebirth of the foundations of the western world in Athens So when are you planning your own trip to the historical world!?

However the latest surprise, allowing ordinary citizens into luxury hotels and resort beaches long reserved for rich foreigners, is a particularly symbolic victory for Cuba's everyman.

Nevertheless the measure is largely symbolic since tourist hotels in Cuba can cost anywhere from 60 to more than 200 US dollars a night, well out of reach for most Cubans who on average earn 20 dollars a month.

Cruise Lines Set New Sails in Rough Financial Seas

Cruise-Lines-Set-New-Sails

The travel downturn is already taking a toll. Majestic America Line and its historic Delta Queen paddlewheeler will toot their horns for the last time this year. Norwegian Cruise Line—50% owned by private equity firm Apollo Global Management—is complaining about cost overruns on a giant ship being built for it in France. Many in the industry view this as a way for Norwegian to get out of its contract. Norwegian declined to comment. And after 40 years on the seas, the Queen Elizabeth 2, owned by Carnival's Cunard Line, is being retired to become a hotel in Dubai.

Royal Caribbean is being hit by the falloff, too, though huge vessels like the Solstice should help. After netting $603.4 million in 2007, the Miami company will earn $580 million this year on sales of $6.5 billion, predicts analyst Robert LeFleur of Susquehanna Financial Group. The cruise line has been using specials—book a cruise for one, and the second passenger is half-price—to fill many of its ships. But it hasn't discounted the Solstice. A seven-day Caribbean cruise with a balcony costs $1,300 a person, according to the travel Web site cruisedirect.com, about 30% more than comparable packages.

Megaships can be more profitable because they let cruise lines spread fixed costs across a larger base of customers and boast more ways to goose revenues from onboard restaurants and shops. "Even in today's climate, these ships are so economical they will produce a very healthy cash flow," CEO Fain insists. Still, Royal Caribbean's stock price has plunged by more than two-thirds in the past year, to under 12, its lowest level since late 2001.

Solstice is an attempt to reach out to the 80% of Americans who have never taken a cruise, particularly middle-aged women. Royal Caribbean hired a market research firm called Synectics, which in 2006 took five boomer women on a four-month tour of cruise ships, boutique hotels, and furniture stores. The focus group also visited the Solstice's shipyard in Germany. Among the design features they suggested: more storage space above and below the bed, double doors that opened up to the adjoining cabin, and footrests in the showers for shaving legs.

Royal Caribbean hopes to make a bigger splash in December 2009 with the launch of what will be the world's biggest ship, the 2,700-cabin Oasis of the Seas. Longer than an aircraft carrier, the $1.5 billion vessel will feature seven "neighborhoods" including a Central Park with outdoor cafés, as well as a boardwalk with a tattoo parlor and fortune teller. Says Peter Thomson, chief operating officer of travel agent Cruise Holidays: "That's a lot of excitement to sell."v
